Horses and People
Helping Each Other
The James River Horse Foundation, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections, maintains a herd of 24 off-the-track thoroughbreds at the State Farm Work Center in Goochland County, Virginia. At the end of their racing careers nobody wanted these horses, now they have a home for life. That would be enough, but it is only the heart of this program. The soul of the program is the impact theses horses have on the inmates who care for them.
The positive growth and confidence our graduates have developed by working with the horses is something they carry with them through re-entry into their communities. With your help, the James River Horse Foundation will strive to continually develop and expand the program – teaching confidence, pride in work, acceptance of responsibility and the value of personal contribution.
