Our mission

The mission of the James River Horse Foundation is to provide humane care, safe sanctuary and, whenever possible, an appropriate second career for Thoroughbred horses that are no longer able to race, and that may be at risk for abuse, neglect or slaughter. In connection with that mission, JRHF also provides an established curriculum of training and supervision in equine care and management to non-violent felons at the Virginia Department of Corrections State Farm Work Center in Goochland County, Virginia during their incarceration which encourages participants to gain self-respect, to work as a team toward defined goals, and to acquire skills valuable for reentry into their communities.
